چکیده
This paper covers numerical investigations of the draping of woven fabrics into a “hat” shape, combining a hemispherical cup with a wide flat rim. A mechanical approach is adopted using finite element analysis (FEA) methodology. In this, the fabric is considered as a solid sheet with mechanical properties and friction properties. In this study, a linear elastic anisotropic material model describes the deformation of fabrics. An explicit dynamic finite element analysis is applied and systematic parametric numerical studies are presented, which incorporate investigations of the effects of numerical parameters, material properties and processing conditions on the draping of fabrics. More specifically, the effects of the following variables and parameters are included: number of elements, number of time increments in the dynamic FEA analysis, punch speed, shear and tensile moduli of fabric, coefficient of friction for all interfaces and level of load on the fabric holder. q 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. This paper discusses a summary of analytical modeling as applied to selected smart composites which include piezoelectric composites, shape memory alloy (SMA) fiber composites, and piezoresistive composites. First we discuss the definition of ‘smart materials’ which exhibit coupling among mechanical, thermal and electromagnetic behavior, then the Eshelby’s formulations based on a simple algebra...

This study examines whether there are differences in consumers’ shopping behavior and product prices in grocery stores due to cultural orientation. The study uses a field setting in Southern California, comparing samples of American and Chinese culture on two occasions, each five years apart. Theory suggests that price sensitivity and the importance of the status of buyers differ substantially ...

Monotonic and fatigue tests were carried out in four-point bending on a glass fabric/epoxy composite, using two different stress ratios. Ultimate failure both in monotonic tests and in fatigue was precipitated by microbuckling phenomena happening at the compression side of the specimens. The experimental results were evaluated adopting a fatigue model statistically implemented, based on the hyp...

Polymer matrix composites can be severely degraded/damaged under thermal loading caused by fire. Fire degradation of fiber composites is a serious concern in large load-bearing structural applications such as ship, piers and bridges. This paper describes results from combined experimental and theoretical studies of compressive failures of polymer-matrix glass-reinforced composites which have un...

A methodology is introduced to test carbon-fiber-reinforced, hoop-wound composite cylinders for their biaxial mechanical properties under axial compression and hoop tension. The understanding of the behavior of these composites under biaxial loads is extremely important in the design of pulsed magnets. These composites are used as reinforcements for both the inner conducting layers and as an ov...
